
In 2014, Guo Shang-kun enrolled at the Guangdong Vocational Academy of Art specialising in the military role and supporting role (painted face). During the course of study, he received training from numerous Peking and Cantonese opera instructiors and studied several Cantonese opera excerpts such as "The Phoenix Pavilion", "Fighting Jiao Zan", "Executing the Duke's Second Brother", "Mu Guiying’s Marriage Proposal", and "Yandang Mountain". In 2018, he joined the Guangzhou Cantonese Opera Theatre for an internship,where he preformed in both traditional Cantonese opera and contemporary peices.
Upon graduation, he was admitted to The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts with a full scholarship. During his time at the Academy, he studied major works including "Wu Song in the lun", "Xue Pinggui Leaving His Humble Adobe", "Pavilion of a Hundred Flowers","The Legend of the Border Outpost", "Forty Years of Cherished Love", and the newly adapted Cantonese Opera" Pearl Bay" . He graduated with First Class Honours from the Academy in 2024.
