Legend of Li Wa

Zheng Beihai sends his son, Xuanhe, to the capital for the civil examination one year ahead of time, hoping for him to gain life experiences through travelling. Xuanhe and his friend Lu Huawei go to the pleasure quarters and Xuanhe is so attracted by Li Yaxian that he drops his horsewhip. They fell in love and Madame Jia let him stay at the pleasure quarter. Xuanhe spent all his money and so Madame Jia kicks him out. Huawei teach Xuanhe to make money by mourning for people who died without a son. He bumps into his father on the street and is almost beaten to death. Yaxian saves him and keeps him company as he studied for the next civil examination. However, he is always distracted by Yaxian's beauty and so Yaxian ends up gauging out her own eyes to reprimand him. Xuanhe studies hard and wins the title of "Champion Scholar." Beihai despises Yaxian for being a courtesan and wishes to send her away. When he realized what she has done for Xuanhe, he is so touched and finally accepts her.
