The Minister Wong Chun believes that marriages should be established between families of equal social status and wealth. However, his daughter Wong Shui-lan secretly pledges her life to a poor scholar, Chiang Sai-lung, defying her father's expectations. Initially, it seemed that the chaos of war would tear their family apart, and Shui-lan would have no choice but to accept her fate. But amidst the turmoil, Wong Chun reunites with Shui-lan and, upon learning of her relationship with the poor scholar, he becomes furious and forces her to divorce Sai-lung. Sai-lung heartbroken, ultimately drowns himself in the river, weighed down with a stone.
