Legend of Li Wa

Zheng Bei-hai sends his son, Xuan-he, to the capital for the civil examination one year ahead of time, hoping for him to gain life experiences through travelling. Xuan-he and his friend Lu Hua-wei go to the pleasure quarters and Xuan-he is so attracted by Li Ya-xian that he drops his horsewhip. They fell in love and Madame Jia let him stay at the pleasure quarter. Xuan-he spent all his money and so Madame Jia kicks him out. Hua-wei teach Xuan-he to make money by mourning for people who died without a son. He bumps into his father on the street and is almost beaten to death. Ya-xian saves him and keeps him company as he studied for the next civil examination. However, he is always distracted by Ya-xian's beauty and so Ya-xian ends up gauging out her own eyes to reprimand him. Xuan-he studies hard and wins the title of "Champion Scholar." Beihai despises Ya-xian for being a courtesan and wishes to send her away. When he realized what she has done for Xuan-he, he is so touched and finally accepts her.
