Roger Chan

Chan is one of the most active Cau actors (clown role) in Hong Kong. He is now the vice-chairman of the 40th Council of The Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong.

Chan was a student of the renowned Chinese opera actor Leung Hon-wai. He has been passionate about Cantonese opera since he was young. In 1984, he started receiving amateur training in Cantonese opera at the Hon Fung Cantonese Opera Institute. He has learned from other veterans such as Liu Xun, Guo Jinhua, Hui Kin-seun, and Han Yanming, from whom he has received valuable advice and mastered skills with a solid foundation. He has skillfully played male Cau, female Cau, Sousang (bearded male role), Zing (painted face male role), and Loudaan (old female role), receiving good acclaim from the audience. He made his first appearance on stage in 1985, performing in Tai O as an offering to deities, where he played the role of a soldier, while Leung Hon-wai played Sang (male role). Chan quit his clerical job in 2000 and became a full-time Cantonese opera actor. He has organized performances featuring stars and young talents, performing classics in Cantonese opera.

In 2005, Chan self-financed the formation of the Hung Ka Po Cantonese Opera Gallery in pursuit of further exploration in the realm of Cantonese opera. Since 2006, he has performed an average of 200 shows every year. He is currently active in Cantonese opera troupes of various scales.
