Wong Chiu-kwan

Ms. Wong is a veteran Cantonese Opera female artist in Hong Kong, whose mentors are the two prominent female-acting male artists, Tam Shan-shan and Lau Wing-chuen. She excels in martial roles especially in ‘The Bound-feet Lau Kam-ting crashes Four Gates’. With Wong’s round and sweet voice, along with solid movement make her an all-rounded artist. She has toured in different countries with outstanding reputation, including the UK, US, Canada, Australia, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Wong has worked with numerous male artists, including Man Chin-sui, Law Ka-ying, Lee Lung, Ng Chin-fung, Lung Koon-tin and Yuen Siu-fai, etc. She has assumed a variety of roles, such as ‘Lau Kam-ting Thrashes the Fire Dragon Formation’, ‘Romance of Butterflies in Dream’, ‘Pearl Flag’ and ‘The Drunken Emperor Orders to Have His Brother Executed’. With her own troupe Koon Kwan Tin Cantonese Opera Troupe, Wong has performed in some new plays including ‘Dream of the Green Mansion’ and ‘A Place in the Sun’.

 


To pursue the excellence in Xiqu, Wong studied the art of Shanghai Yue Opera under the tutelage of Shi Jihua. Wong also promotes Cantonese Opera in local schools recently.

 

 

On 9th November, 2010, Wong was awarded by Secretary for Home Affairs' Commendation Scheme for her support to the promotion of culture, and the Award of Best Artist in Xiqu of the Hong Kong Art Development Awards 2010 by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council on 27th April, 2011.
