Yuen Siu-fai

Born in Foshan and of Xinhui ancestry, Yuen Siu-fai is a Cantonese Opera performer, artistic director, and playwright in Hong Kong.

 

Initiated by Xin Ding Xiang yiao and apprenticed under Yuen Xiaotien in martial arts, Yuen had studied under artists such as Liang Shaofeng, Lin Zhaoliu, Wong Toa, Liu Zhaorong, Liu Caihong, Xu Xuehong, etc. and he finally became an apprentice of renowned artist Mak Bing-wing. In 1970, together with Yau Sing-po and Leung Hon-wai, they formed the group of Hong Kong Experimental Cantonese Opera. In 1993, he founded “Home of Cantonese Opera” — an organization that devoted to propagation of the art form. Since its formation, the organization has produced numerous grand productions.

Besides acting, Yuen has been active in script-writing. His works includes “The Repatriation of Cai Wenji”, “The Four Scholars”, “Revenge at Guang Chang Long” which are highly acclaimed. In 1992, Yuen was awarded the BH Honorary Medal. In 2003, he won the Award for Arts Achievement from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council; and on Honorary Fellowship of the Hong Kong Institution of Education in 2003 and 2012 respectively. In 2014, Yuen was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star. In 2015, he won the Award for Outstanding Contribution in Arts from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.
